Who: Board of Directors



Artis Hampshire-Cowan is Senior Vice President and Secretary at Howard University. She previously served concurrently as Vice President for Human Resource Management, and provided executive oversight of human resource management for a workforce of over 6,000. Hampshire-Cowan is a sought-after speaker and trainer whose training specialties include organizational development, leadership, managing change, diversity, board-ceo relationships, board development, and strategic deployment. She graduated with honors from Morris Brown College with a degree in Business Management and received her JD from Temple University Law Center. She subsequently served as an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia and relocated to Washington, DC, where she started her career of more than twelve years with the government of the District of Columbia, which included service as a Congressional lobbyist, consumer and regulatory enforcement administrator, and attorney-advisor to the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and the City Administrator. She also served as General Counsel at RFK Stadium, where she served as in-house counsel and the chief negotiator for several sports initiatives including the Redskins/District proposal to construct a new Redskins stadium in the District of Columbia. She later served as special counsel to Prince George's County Executive Wayne Curry regarding successful negotiations to relocate the Redskins to the Maryland suburbs. In addition to her board role at Venture Philanthropy Partners, she serves on the boards of the DC Chamber, the Women's Advisory of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, the Prince George's County Community Foundation, and Girls Inc., DC. She is also a Commissioner of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. She has also served on the boards of numerous civic and professional organizations, including Morris Brown College Foundation, Inc., Leadership Washington, Bright Beginnings, Inc., The National Conference for Community and Justice, Women of Washington, and the Greater Washington Board of Trade. She is a member of the Women's Forum, the Links, Inc., and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
