    Here Comes the Sun

    In his book, The Foundation: A Great American Secret, Joel Fleishman offered a wise insider’s assessment of charitable foundations’ great contributions and liabilities. The primary liability he identified was our sector’s lack of transparency. “The only way for foundations to protect the freedom, creativity, and flexibility they now enjoy,” he argued, “is to open their doors and windows to the world so that all can see what they are doing and how they are doing it.”

    Foundation leaders offered supportive comments about the book, but I feared the message would ultimately fall on deaf ears in the nonprofit sector because there was no forcing function to drive the kind of change that Joel advocated. The sector does react and appear more introspective about issues of transparency and accountability when we face the threat of Congressional scrutiny. However, Joel’s book came out after several years of scrutiny had dissipated, following the passage of a modest set of charitable-sector reforms and a change in Senate leadership.

    In retrospect, I was wrong to assume that waning interest from Congress would mean waning pressure on foundations and nonprofits to heed Joel’s warnings. A new force has gathered tremendous steam in just the three years since Joel completed his book. It’s far more powerful and enduring than a Senate committee’s gaze, and it’s affecting public, private, and nonprofit sectors alike. It’s the power of tens of millions of networked citizens with creativity and attitude. In the words of Internet guru Clay Shirky, “Here comes everybody.”

    Few organizations will be proactive enough to embrace this bottom-up, citizen-driven transparency revolution. After all, being transparent is a rather unnatural act to the 20th and 21st century command-and-control, top-down organizations that still characterize so much of our public, private, and nonprofit worlds. But mark my words: This revolution is coming.

    As hard as it often is to create change in institutions—large and small—it’s only going to take two potent ingredients in this case.

    The first ingredient is anxiety, and we have that in spades. Yes, the recession is starting to ease, but the economy is still incredibly precarious—still cutting jobs rather than creating them, and still adding mountains of debt that will dramatically change what we can expect from our government in the years ahead. And that’s just the economy. Add to that volatile mix a political system that’s better at producing vitriol than results, renewed fears of an overbearing government, two wars, terrorist threats, an approaching flu pandemic and you see a lot of people “at the top of the cage.”

    In this anxious environment, citizens are not in a trusting mood. They look at every institution—whether it’s our national government or a local hospital—through a skeptical lens. They’re giving no one the benefit of the doubt. More and more, they sound like the masses of anxious, enraged citizens in the movie “Network” who scream out their windows, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more!”

    The second ingredient is new technology. Even as the macro forces in our lives feel out of our control, the Internet and the new generation of networked tools are enabling a shift in power into the hands of average citizens. Thanks to these emerging tools, every day it becomes easier, faster, and cheaper for average citizens to:

    • share their reactions and reviews with anyone anywhere, and to aggregate, distill, mash up, and use this feedback in myriad ways
    • gain the benefit of insiders’ perspectives on how organizations—and those in them—function and perform
    • connect, coordinate, and collaborate with those who have shared interests and passions
    • access raw data and turn it into actionable information—a process that previously required, in the words of The Washington Monthly’s Charles Homans, “a degree in computer science, a university lab mainframe’s worth of circuits, and an awful lot of time.”

    Rapid availability and usability have huge implications. Citizens—whether they’re motivated by anxiety, anger, or altruism—are gaining more power than ever to hold leaders accountable. We have to hope that this newfound power is used constructively and does not further harden our views, feed the ideologues, and rob of us of the civility critical to our democratic way of life.

    Let me offer a few of my favorite examples that give a glimpse of the potential for positive change:

    • Recovery.org, a website created by the Seattle-based information aggregator Onvia, is holding the federal government’s feet to the fire. “The President and the federal government are asking the American people to trust them with an unprecedented level of funding to address the economic emergency…This site will help you track these funds to see how and where recovery dollars are spent and allow you to vote if a project is worthwhile or wasteful.” The user-friendly site is putting constructive pressure on the federal government’s own initiative to track recovery dollars. A similar, beneficial competition can be seen in efforts by Washington Watch, Open Secrets, and the federal Office of Management and Budget to catalog Congressional earmarks, the pet projects of individual Members of Congress.
    • The Good Guide, a website and free iPhone app, helps consumers make more-informed decisions about the products they buy. The guide makes it easy for shoppers to get health, environmental, and social ratings on more than 70,000 consumer products, from toothpaste to toys. The Good Guide is a harbinger of more sophisticated services that will allow consumers shopping at any store in America to scan any product on the shelves with their cell phones and get information about every aspect of the product, the company that makes it, and search for better deals at other online and physical stores.
    • In an illustration that no institution is exempt from scrutiny, the Consumerist, a blog run by the Consumers Union, sparked a massive uproar against Facebook, one of the pioneers of social networking. After the blog brought attention to objectionable changes in the Facebook terms of service, hundreds of thousands of users Jiu Jitsued the company by putting Facebook’s own social networking tools to work in organizing the protests. Two days after the Consumerist blog entry was posted, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was forced to reverse course.

    The examples barely scratch the surface—and they are just the beginning.

    In the for-profit arena, consumers will gain more and more information to help them make more-educated decisions about what to buy and from whom. In a recent article titled “Transparency Triumph,” the consumer-trends firm trendwatching.com concludes, “Think ‘transparency’ is an established, maturing theme? You ain’t seen nothing yet.”

    Amazon, the pioneer of online customer reviews, has advanced and profited from this trend for many years. But now more traditional businesses are embracing it as well. This past July, Walmart announced that it will create a “Worldwide Sustainable Product Index,” a one-stop shop for information on how Walmart’s products rate in four key areas of sustainability: “energy and climate, material efficiency, natural resources, and people and community.” “Increasingly [customers] want…to know that the materials in the product are safe, that it was made well and that it was produced in a responsible way,” according to Walmart CEO Mike Duke. “We do not see this as a trend that will fade.”

    Consumers will gain more power even in the Byzantine world of health care. Websites such as Vimo, ZocDoc, and MedTipster are starting to force greater transparency by giving consumers the tools to make more-informed choices on doctors, insurers, and prescription drugs. And whether or not President Obama succeeds in overhauling our health care system, those patients and their families with access to available Internet-based information will gain more and more ability to advocate for their care. We are starting to see the potential now in the form of emerging online services like RealAge, DrWeil, RevolutionHealth, and Organized Wisdom; the websites of healthcare giants like Cleveland Clinic (full disclosure: I sit on the board); government sources like the National Cancer Institute and the National Library of Medicine; and discussion forums run by nonprofit research and advocacy organizations like the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, where patients share quality information that is highly relevant to other patients.

    The power and importance of this trend hit very close to home just three weeks ago. Our oldest daughter was hospitalized, and it appeared that she had a serious, systemic infection. (Most thankfully, she is now fine.) We felt incredibly fortunate that we were able to bring her to the Cleveland Clinic. But even with a battery of tests over the course of a four-day ordeal in the hospital, the doctors had a hard time getting at the cause of our daughter’s condition. We now believe the trigger was my daughter’s use of an antibiotic that has been known to produce symptoms similar to meningitis. Because of our own research, we had this information even before it was raised by those caring for our daughter.

    In the public arena, new tools that build on the Recovery.org model will give taxpayers far greater visibility into the workings of government. “Eventually we could see more clearly not just what the government is doing, but also how well what it’s doing is actually working,” Homans wrote in the July/August issue of The Washington Monthly. “For instance, [we could track] education reforms through a matrix of crime and employment data to gauge the rippling effects of policy decisions in something like real time, and [adjust] them accordingly.” President Obama and his new Chief Information Officer, Vivek Kundra, are taking admirable steps to accelerate the dawn of a more-transparent Government 2.0. The latest example is the Administration’s decision to break from precedent and make public the names of White House visitors (with some reasonable exceptions).

    In light of these developments, it would be hard to argue that foundations and charities will remain a world apart. Today, according to GuideStar’s first annual report on nonprofit transparency, only a small fraction of the 1,800 nonprofits surveyed post the basic information they are required to make available for public inspection on their websites. But as social media and open-source models, such as Great Nonprofits and many other new sites, start to generate information about these nonprofits, they will be forced to share more of what they do and how well they do it.

    Increasingly tight budgets and scarce resources will drive charities to get more serious about collecting, analyzing, and sharing information on their performance and impact. “Unless [nonprofits] can cite evidence that what they are doing…will indeed make the world better,” the much-admired Harvard scholar Lee Schorr wrote in the August 20 issue of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, “they won’t get support. Not from any level of government, not from increasingly sophisticated philanthropists, and not from the public.”

    Foundations will come under pressure to open the kimono as well. Prospective and actual grantees have always been reluctant to bite the hand that feeds them. But new tools will give them, as well as those they serve, plenty of opportunity to speak truth to power and share their views with anyone connected to the Internet. Today, we’re starting to see anonymous blogs that watch and scrutinize every development at large foundations, such as the Gates Keepers blog. It is only a matter of time before we see sites that make it easy for grantees, prospective grantees, beneficiaries, and community stakeholders at large to rate foundations, just as entrepreneurs now rate venture capitalists on the site The Funded. And we will see sites that provide a wealth of anonymous insights from foundation personnel, just as for-profit employees are doing on the website Glass Door.

    Of course, we won’t like all the feedback. Some of it will be vituperative, ill-informed, or downright silly. But on the whole, the process of opening our windows and doors will make us and our sector far more effective. The truth is, these new online tools provide grantmakers and grantseekers alike a remarkable way to collect the information they need—if they’re willing to listen and then adapt and respond to what they hear.

    At Venture Philanthropy Partners, we have strived to be introspective and to hold ourselves accountable to our constituents—especially those who have invested financially in our work. Far from perfect, we have learned how to admit our missteps and share what we’ve learned. We give our stakeholders access to real-time insights through Twitter (@vppartners) and now have more than 800 followers. We recently commissioned our second external assessment to judge how well we’ve done what we claim to do. We shared a summary of the results of the assessment with our investors over this summer, and we’re preparing a version for public release this fall. We’re taking baby steps in the right direction. And we are committed to doing more.

    Transparency is not a fad of the moment; it is a fact of life. This genie is not going back into the bottle—and that, on balance, is a very good thing for our society. Applied constructively, greater transparency means more-accountable public, private, and nonprofit leaders and institutions. It means citizens achieve greater power to make informed decisions. It means increased pressure for better, more-sustainable products, services, and social impact. It means smarter allocation of precious financial resources.

    The new transparency is a huge challenge for all of us. But the sooner we acknowledge its inevitability and importance, the better we’ll be able to harness this new force for our own good.

    Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP became a corporate partner to VPP in December, 2007.

    This field trip to Willkie is the result of a partnership between the Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP Greater DC Community Foundation and Higher Achievement, an after-school program that offers educational opportunities to underserved area students.  Willkie, a corporate partner to VPP, established its Foundation in 2004 to fund educational initiatives for underprivileged youth in the Greater DC metropolitan area. 

    The Willkie Foundation is a reflection of Willkie’s unique approach to philanthropy and pro bono work: Giving back to the community is not an afterthought, but a deeply entrenched element of the Firm’s culture.  Willkie DC Partner Martin Weinstein said, “With the dramatic growth and success of the Willkie DC office over the last several years—30 attorneys in 1990, 110 today—we began looking for a way to give back to the community in a more organized, collective fashion that could magnify the impact of our contributions and also serve as a rallying point to keep us connected with each other.  From this central idea, the Willkie Foundation was born.”

    The Foundation was launched with 100 percent participation from DC partners and counsel, a significant Firm contribution, and widespread support from associates and staff.  Every year for the last five years, partners and counsel, as well as associates and staff, have contributed individually to the Foundation, and Willkie’s Executive Committee has approved a sizable contribution on behalf of the Firm.  Willkie Partner David Murray explained, “We have an amazing culture at Willkie, and the fact that our Foundation has just crossed the $1 million threshold of giving is simply the latest example of the commitment of this Firm to making a big impact in terms of our dollars and volunteer time on our local community.”

    Participation from all levels of the Firm is one of the hallmarks of the Foundation.  Partners, associates, and staff at Willkie are all highly encouraged to engage in pro bono and philanthropic work, and the supportive environment that this encouragement creates is evident in the Foundation’s success.  All levels of the Firm are represented on the Foundation’s 11-member Advisory Committee, a body tasked with researching and recommending potential grantees and planning volunteer events with the existing grantees. 

    Willkie believes in engaging deeply with its principal grantees, including participating as mentors, board members, and coordinators of various events that bring Willkie folks together with their grantees to benefit the kids.  Recently, the Willkie Foundation issued a “rescue grant” to help Fields of Dreams keep baseball alive in the District this summer for nearly 100 underserved youth.  Willkie celebrated the newest of its grantees, a nonprofit founded on the key life principles of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, by organizing an event at which attorneys and staff teamed up with Fields of Dreams kids and coaches for a fun summer afternoon of softball, pizza, and highly coveted Willkie chocolate bars.  A week later, Willkie removed all tables and chairs from the largest conference space of its K Street offices to allow 20 middle school participants in the DC SCORES program (another of Willkie’s principal grantees for the past five years) to join Willkie attorneys and staff for a discussion about law firm life, student recitations of their poetry, and demonstrations of their amazing soccer skills.

    When asked about the key to the Willkie Foundation’s success, Frank Buono, Willkie Partner and Chairman of the Foundation’s Advisory Committee, said, “The Foundation is a terrific group effort, with participation from every level of the Firm.  It is a great way to give back to our local community and to achieve a common goal that is truly worthwhile.  And each of us at Willkie receives so much in return from the wonderful grantee organizations that we have the privilege to call our partners.”

    In the coming months, the Willkie Foundation plans to host another mock FCC trial for 25 new students, spend two Saturdays in the fall conducting mock interviews for Higher Achievement scholars to prepare them for the grueling high school applications process, and coordinate a college admissions workshop event at Willkie, where attorneys and staff will meet with high school students to share stories of their own college admissions and the path to becoming a lawyer.

    “VPP and the Willkie Foundation share many common goals: results-driven philanthropy, continuous learning, and becoming highly engaged with the organizations in which we invest through long-term partnerships.  With such an alignment of values, the VPP-Willkie partnership promises great opportunities for VPP’s second portfolio organizations,” said Carol Thompson Cole, President and CEO of Venture Philanthropy Partners.

    College Summit Writing Workshop Leaves No One Unchanged

    Tywon doesn't do it for himself-he does it for them. He does it for his late grandfather and his two best friends who were murdered on the streets of Baltimore. A quiet, but not quite shy kid, Tywon has few close friends and an unstable home atmosphere. He finds his solitude in the gym, where he trains as a kickboxer. In his own words, "It gives me a spiritual connection to my grandfather and people who have left me.”

    I met Tywon at a College Summit Writing Workshop at Gettysburg College held July 30 through August 2. Two other VPP team members and I volunteered at the four-day workshop, which guided 51 low-income students through the college application and transition process. Gettysburg College is a small, beautiful, rural campus just 90 minutes from DC, situated right next to the historic battlefield. The campus is full of green space, comfy wooden Adirondack chairs, and a pervading air of calm. It's a nice change from the hustle and noise of Washington, DC.

    When we arrived, it felt like my first day of college all over again. Even though I was going to be a writing coach and not a student, the butterflies were fluttering all over my stomach; fear and anxiety were ruling the moment. What was I getting myself into? These students would look to me for guidance, yet what could I share? Students, 16- to 19-years old, are a different breed. How was I going to relate?

    Once I met the staff, my worries subsided-slightly. They didn't fully disappear until a few hours into working directly with the students. The lead staff laid out the dynamics, goals, and hopes for the workshop. The group of approximately 25 College Summit staff and volunteers, including me, would be working with the students to achieve four main goals:

    • Craft a personal statement for college applications
    • Gain insight about the financial aid process
    • Talk one-on-one with a college counselor
    • Learn how to positively influence their peers outside of the workshop.

    This summer, College Summit held 55 workshops around the country, working with more than 2,600 students nationwide. The National Capital Region (NCR) region, which includes D.C, Prince George's County, Balitmore, Arlington, and Alexandria, hosted 8 workshops in 2009, reaching approximately 400 local students-a 400% increase since 2004

    Students generally come from backgrounds and environments that are not conducive to positive school attitudes or aspirations to attend college. Some come from communities with violence and high levels of poverty. Some of the students work 40 hours a week while attending high school. Many have seen death firsthand, be it friend or family. Many never envision themselves as a part of a college community. Yet these students are able to keep hold of something positive, via friends, family, church, neighbors, or activities, such as Tywon and his kickboxing. Amonique spoke of her faith, developed in her supportive church community. Alexis played basketball. Chardozie has his passion for drawing and his family heritage of pride and success in Africa.

    The four-day workshop is physically and emotionally draining for both the students and for us, the staff. It is a daunting task, working from early in the morning to late at night helping students craft and edit their personal statements. It's difficult not to get lost in your own thoughts, memories, and feelings. After spending six hours a day with the students, you battle through emotions brought up by what they express about their lives and backgrounds. The work forces you to reflect on your own experiences and perceptions.

    Late nights full of coffee and reading followed the days, so I could produce positive and directional feedback for my students. Upon completion of my tasks, I would grab a few hours of sleep on the uncomfortable, one-inch dormitory foam mattress bed with sheets that don't fit in a room filled with heavy, stagnant air. Powdered eggs and tasteless, questionable food in the cafeteria awaited me each morning (one of the few parts of college I strove to forget). Despite all of that, getting out of bed was always easy. I was excited and eager to give feedback to these students. It felt like turning in an awesome essay or solving a hard problem. I couldn't wait to help them believe in their ability to achieve. My personal butterflies vanished-no more fear or anxiety. I realized I was connecting with these students, which gave me an enormous sense of pride.

    In addition to working on the personal statements, the staff as a whole discussed the skills, interests, and potential for college success and college recommendations for each student. These sessions could be intense. Agreements and disagreement arose among writing coaches, chaperones, and college counselors. Everyone's experiences with the students varied. When discussing Tywon, however, each of us had the same opinion: he is an intelligent, hard-working student with infinite potential, from a very tough and rough background, who is on the verge of breaking out of his shell and letting the world see his true potential, if encouraged in a positive direction.

    Not a single participant, student, or staff member leaves a College Summit workshop unchanged. The students make lasting connections with each other-connections that help maintain the hope and positive attitudes stoked by the College Summit weekend. The selected students are "Peer Leaders" at their respective schools, which means that the school staff views them as influencers and leaders. The students do not necessarily have the best grades, or participate in the most activities, but they have the respect of their peers. College Summit hopes the students take their newfound confidence back to their high schools, and use their influence over other students to inspire others to strive for college no matter their environments.

    Tywon is going back to a hard life. Steve, Alexis, Angelica, Kerry, Kenny, and David are going back to hard lives. The list of names is endless. But the College Summit workshop has offered these students a chance to show off their abilities and express themselves without being judged, stereotyped, or written off. It has empowered them to share their ideas and tell their stories. This weekend, and all the other College Summit workshops throughout the country, creates a support network strengthened by new friends and relationships with many of the adults present. For many, it is their first glimpse at the possibilities of a future of prosperity, joy, and happiness.

    My heart went out to the students. I could do nothing more for them when the workshop was over. I, like many, re-awakened to the realities that some students face. The final day you could see the change in everyone's eyes. A change for the better. A change that we hope sticks with them. They had to take on the challenge themselves. The challenge to keep and make the changes needed in their lives. Even Tywon was talking to everyone, making friends, and exchanging contact information. He was no longer just a quiet face in the crowd, going with the group, hiding from the world. He had bonded, he had grown. His eyes read like a book-so much joy, so much hope, a sense of belonging, yet sad that this chapter must end. It was the chapter, not the book; the ending has not yet been written. Tywon knows now that he has a real shot. Tywon will begin to do it for Tywon. I hope he will continue to grow, carry a positive attitude into his future endeavors, and get himself away from the negativity that surrounds him. I hope for all the students that this weekend starts them on a path to create lasting change in their lives.

    Board Changes

    AALEADAALEAD Names New Board Members
    Thanks to Rick Chen, Manager of Development and Communication, for this update.

    Asian American Lead (AALEAD) announced the appointment of four new board members this month. The four new members join an 11-member board that oversees AALEAD’s finances, program implementation, strategic planning, and regional outreach.

    Jessica Hsu is the CEO and Co-Founder of Clairvoyant Technologies, Inc (CTI), whose mission is to enhance the overall education experience of students through the delivery of game-based interactive educational content as a homework supplement. Prior to starting CTI, Hsu was principal engineer and R&D manager at BAE Systems, with a diverse background in research, integration and testing, modeling and simulation, protocol design and development, and systems engineering. She also has a decade of tutoring and mentoring experience with various age and education level of students, including teaching at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talent Youth.

    Amee Kishore Shah is a Strategic Account Manager and Senior Manager for MorganFranklin Corporation. She works as a trusted adviser to public and commercial sector executives in the areas of program management, strategic planning and transformation, and process evaluation and redesign. Shah, who has a background in business administration and international affairs, was also a volunteer community organizer for two presidential campaigns. She has experience working with Asian countries as the Asia Program Manager at the International Republican Institute, where she helped nonprofits in emerging and young democracies find innovative ways to meet their missions.

    Kinley Bray is an associate attorney in the real estate group at Arent Fox, LLP. She represents clients before local and federal administrative bodies in land use, planning, and zoning matters, and she has litigated real estate matters at both the trial and appellate levels. Bray’s practice also includes advising clients throughout feasibility studies and providing zoning opinion letters in connection with commercial real estate acquisitions, as well as assisting in resolving matters of title and survey in commercial real estate transactions. Prior to her appointment on AALEAD’s Board, Bray provided pro-bono legal advice that was key to helping AALEAD successfully renew its zoning application to continue to operate as a community center. Kinley is also a member of the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) and District of Columbia Building Industry Association.

    Thu Anh Nguyen is a Dean of Students and English Teacher for Georgetown Day School. Nguyen, with a background in creative writing and English, is also a past Director of Georgetown Day School Middle School Camp. Her dedication to youth and education is clearly reflected in her various public presentations and publications regarding equity and diversity in the classroom.

    Several weeks ago Louise entered CFNC’s Birchmere center with a big smile after learning that CFNC was re-opening two classrooms in the Charles Houston Recreation Center.  The second she heard the news, she hurried over to enroll her daughter because she knew from past experience that her daughter would receive a high quality preschool experience typically only available for middle class families who can afford to pay for it. 

    As she filled out enrollment forms, she provided an update on her son, a former CFNC student, who is flourishing in school and loves the arts.  She said, “His [CFNC] teachers were always telling me that I had to come into class to see his latest work.” As a young, single mother, she recalled how much it meant to her to be able to leave her only child at a safe and caring preschool while she went to work. Today, eight years later, “he plans to be so many things: an artist, an architect, and an animator. I really attribute this to the center, because he spent so much time there at such an early age.”     

    CFNC first offered its free preschool programming to residents of Alexandria’s Charles Houston neighborhood in 1987.  In 2006, these programs were suspended due to a planned major renovation of the Charles Houston Recreation Center.  After three years, the renovations are complete, and, on September 8, CFNC re-opened two new classrooms at the center that will provide 36 low-income families with free preschool and family support services, increasing the total number of families served by CFNC from 157 in FY2009 to 193 in FY2010. 

    “Getting my daughter a place at CFNC is really a huge blessing for me because I’ve just started a new job,” Louise said. “Sending her to daycare would have been a huge out-of-pocket expense, and she still would not have had the benefit of qualified teachers with the ability to teach her through play.”

    CFNC’s expansion was made possible by an increase in state funding through the Virginia Preschool Initiative and through the continued support of the City of Alexandria, the Freddie Mac Foundation, BAE Systems, Land & Armaments, the Cafritz Foundation, and others.  Despite this year’s expansion, CFNC still has more than 280 children on its waitlist for the 193 available slots.

    CentroNía Opens Fifth Site

    CentroNía's DC Bilingual Public Charter School began this school year with an additional grade level and location, extending CentroNía into a fifth site. The new location, at the corner of 14th and Irving Street, NW, is one block from CentroNía’s Columbia Road Headquarters. CentroNía at Irving Street provides a bilingual, multicultural school and after-school program for DC Bilingual students in grades 3, 4, and 5.

    Principal Wanda Perez and Resident Principal Andrew Cuny continue to advance DC Bilingual’s educational standards in conjunction with CentroNía executives and management. The organization offers educational services, including Family Institute, Family Literacy, Professional Development Academy, and Child Development Associate Programs, at its other four sites.

    LAYC Profiled in Youth Today

    Latin American Youth Center’s exemplary evaluation efforts are profiled in the September issue of Youth Today, the national youth development newspaper.

    The article, “Do-It-Yourself Data,” focuses on how LAYC created an organizational culture that values evaluation and is now  able to track outcomes in each of the agency’s 50+ programs. Outcomes are tracked in at least one of three major areas: academic success, transition to work or completion of vocational/technical school, or improved healthy behaviors.  Quality evaluation leads to better outcomes for youth served and has had a positive impact on funding.

    Today, LAYC has a three-person staff dedicated to learning and evaluation. Investment by Venture Philanthropy Partners was critical to LAYC’s launch of its evaluation efforts in 2005. The article reprint will be available on the LAYC website in mid-September.

    Gear Up for Giving, Social Media Tutorials for Nonprofits

    The Case Foundation, with support from Goldhirsh Foundation and See3, launched "Gear Up for Giving,” a month-long series of social media tutorials for nonprofits, on September 8.  The initiative will help nonprofits understand how to use “key tools and techniques to create awareness, catalyze civic action and cultivate new supporters and donors for their causes.”

    Giving Gurus will answer specific questions about social media strategy for nonprofits during live online sessions each Tuesday and Thursday during September, and the site also includes self-paced tutorials and other resources
