Growth in individuals served: Overall, the total portfolio is serving almost 45,000 children and youth in some of the hardest hit neighborhoods in our region.
- Over the last decade, the portfolio has grown to serve over 15,000 more children and youth.
- The growth in individuals served varied for each investment partner, ranging from 25% to over 600%.
Reaching new areas of need: In response to changing demographics in the National Capital Region, investment partners have expanded to 31 more stand-alone sites and serve 51 new neighborhoods, including co-located programs.
Demonstrated results: It’s not just about numbers. The nonprofits in VPP’s portfolio are producing meaningful change in children’s lives, more graduates, higher academic achievement, healthier newborn babies, quality early childhood development programs and more. Some examples:
- At the Maya Angelou Public Charter School’s three campuses, over 80% of graduates go on to college or postsecondary school. Compared to their peers, more than two times as many stay in college to earn a Bachelor’s Degree, and overall 10% more earn a BA, AA, or certificate.
Almost 100 young people have new jobs this year thanks to the Latin American Youth Center and another 50 students passed the GED at almost twice the rate of students in Montgomery County. Over 1,000 young people were served in three Maryland sites by the youth employment, academic, and gang prevention programs that did not exist in those communities prior to the VPP investment. - At Mary’s Center, 88% of toddlers received their immunizations, exceeding the average rate in the District of Columbia. And according to research from the Center for Disease Control, when missed work and other indirect costs are added, every dollar invested in immunizations saves $18.
Stronger organizations: VPP investment partners have built senior management teams, strong boards with diverse talent, greater fiscal accountability and stability, systems for performance measurement, and improved programs. Overall, VPP has helped source over 85 new leadership positions for organizations in its portfolio.
Strong commitment by investors: In the first and second fund VPP investors have committed or pledged over $85M to nonprofits in this community.
